Libya 2006 - stories

Every trip has its stories. Here are a selection of ours, though we promise not to bore you too much!

Desert commerce The price of petrol Fixing the truck's windscreen
The drivers of these big trucks spend their time cris-crossing the desert, from north to south, selling their wares. What a life!

Petrol was 0.150 Libyan Dinar per litre - that worked out at about 9 euro cent per litre!

The windscreen on this truck broke the night before - not to worry, our Libyan hosts went into town, got a new windscreen, and fit it right there and then.

Meeting Dan Lynch Lunch Milad taking the Camel's milk
On the left - Chris O'Byrne of the ecliptomaniacs. On the right - Dan Lynch of South Dublin Astronomical Society. The last time I met Dan was at Dublin airport, and that was for the annular eclipse in Spain last October! And here I met him again in Tmissa, Libya.

Lunch. Same lunch as we had the day before, and the same as we were going to have the following day. But it was perfect for the conditions and environment that we found ourselves in.

Milad - one of our drivers - trying to take milk from a mother camel, to give people a taste of it. I don't know if anyone tried it.

Hood up! Sleeping in the car Water cooler
The desert is a harsh environment that takes its toll on vehicles. We have a couple of photos of our trucks with their hoods up. Our drivers and guides were brilliant, though - they pulled at least one all-nighter fixing broken trucks.

We drove something like 3,000 miles during our holiday...
